A report by AfriChild Centre, a child-focused research organization, in collaboration with Terre DesHommies Netherlands (TdH Netherlands) has exposed cases of child labour in the Elgon region.

According to the report, 48% of children aged 5-17 in Kapchworwa, Sironko, Mbale, and Bududa are employed in various stages of coffee production and the value addition chain.

The findings were presented at a dissemination meeting held at Pretoria Hotel in Mbale city.

Alex Arinaitwe, the research coordinator, said that 1,871 children from 771 households were sampled and of these, boys accounted for 51% of the child laborers, while girls made up 42%.

Arinaitwe explained that the decision to engage in child labor is often made by their parents who also get some proceeds from their children’s effort. The report identified poverty as the primary driver of child labour.

Bwayo Emma, the Namisindwa District Male Youth Councilor condemned child labour saying it is a violation of children’s rights. Bwayo said the statistics presented call for immediate action from stakeholders to protect the rights of the children.
